What Is Window Tint & Why Does It Matter for My Tesla?
Window tint is a thin layer of plastic film, often between 1.5 and 2 mil., made from polyester or Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). This film is traditionally applied to a vehicle’s glass to change its appearance. However, in recent years, films have produced significant UVA/UVB resistance without changing their appearance. Many people will apply tint to their Tesla Model 3, Y, X, and S to achieve darker windows and reduce glare. This appearance also provides increased privacy and security. Many Tesla owners, especially in the south, choose window tint for the heat rejection properties and protection from UV rays, including UVA and UVB, which are responsible for causing skin cancer (the fourth leading cause of death in the USA). Tesla owners choose window tint also to assist in managing the interior temperature when they are not in the car to maximize range, during the warmer months, your Tesla Model 3, Y, X, S will cool your cabin to minimize the chances of overheating.
Why Doesn't Tesla Have Window Tint Applied to the Windows?
Different states have different regulations regarding how dark the windows of a Tesla can be. This becomes even more complicated when considering that a Tesla Model 3 and Model S (or any four-door sedan) has different regulations than a Tesla Model Y and Model X.
All the windows on a Tesla Model 3 and Model S have to have the same darkness. These vehicles fall under the “passenger car” law guideline. In comparison, Model Y and Model X fall under the “multi-passenger” vehicle guideline.
For this reason, Tesla could not apply window tint to all windows of all models. Some would be too dark and violate state laws. Models Y and X, which have clear front windows, meet regulations for all states.

Does It Matter Who I Choose to Apply Tint to My Tesla?
As with any service, you will always get what you pay for. Ideally, you want to look for someone who demonstrates a track record of performance in applying window tinting. Online reviews are usually an excellent place to look.
With Tesla having as many electronics on board as they do, selecting someone with strong attention to detail is helpful.
Are the Back Windows of My Tesla Model Y or Model X Already Tinted?
These windows a pigmented glass intended for privacy, as opposed to window tint that has solar energy rejection.
Should I Tint the Roof of My Tesla?
The short answer is yes. You should add window tint to the roof of your Tesla if you use your car a lot during the hot summer months. When we bought our Tesla Model Y, we applied our “heat shield” 80% VLT (visible light transmission), which is virtually clear and produces a Total Solar Energy Rejection (TSER) of 42%, and 73% IR rejection. That was okay until summer came around and things really got HOT inside. We have since then added a layer of PRIME XR PLUS 30% VLT. This film offers 61% TSER and 96% IR rejection.
What Are the Laws for Tesla Window Tint in North Carolina?
Below is an excerpt from North Carolina State law relating to window tint.
§ 20-127. Window Tinting Restrictions. – A window of a vehicle that is operated on a highway or a public vehicular area shall comply with this subsection. The windshield of the vehicle may be tinted only along the top of the windshield and the tinting may not extend more than five inches below the top of the windshield or below the AS1 line of the windshield, whichever measurement is longer. Provided, however, an untinted clear film which does not obstruct vision but which reduces or eliminates ultraviolet radiation from entering a vehicle may be applied to the windshield. Any other window of the vehicle may be tinted in accordance with the following restrictions:
(1) The total light transmission of the tinted window shall be at least thirty-five percent (35%). A vehicle window that, by use of a light meter approved by the Commissioner, measures a total light transmission of more than thirty-two percent (32%) is conclusively presumed to meet this restriction.
