One of our long-standing customers recently acquired this new-to-him Jaguar F-Type R and brought it to our shop. The vehicle is stunning in terms of its power and design, but, unfortunately in this case, the exterior was in a lackluster condition. In particular, swirl marks and overspray plagued the vehicle. Swirl marks are a collection of fine scratches in a vehicle’s paint. They are often caused by improper washing techniques, particularly when a dirty or ill-suited rag or towel is used to wipe the vehicle’s surface. Overspray occurs when fumes from a nearby painting project migrate onto a vehicle’s surface and bond with the paint. It is often not easily detectable, but will inhibit the gloss of a vehicle. Overspray can sometimes be removed with a clay bar, but may require wet-sanding and polishing. Our objective was to restore this Jaguar F-Type R to show-room condition (if not better) and add layers of protection to keep it that way for years to come.
After a thorough wash and decontamination, we began the multi-stage process of paint correction. Using several combinations of polishes and pads, we were able to remove swirl marks. After polishing all surfaces of the body, we inspected the vehicle in order to address any areas in need of special attention.
The 50/50 image below gives you a sense of how much the overspray and swirl marks were harming the gloss of the paint. The left side of this shot is before polish, the right side is after.
One area we had to give special attention was the side sill below the door. This portion of the vehicle had been particularly effected by overspray. We had to wet-sand and polish the panel in order to restore the paint to its original luster. With patience and care, we were able to achieve outstanding results, as shown in the below image.
In addition to polishing the body of the vehicle, we also used a metal polish to restore the shine on the exhaust tips.
We then removed the wheels and shifted our attention there. A thorough steam cleaning on the wheels removed debris and break dust from the surface. After decontaminating, we polished the wheels and applied Opti-Coat Pro Ceramic Coating.
While the wheels were detached, we also steam-cleaned the calipers and coated them with Opti-Coat Pro Ceramic Coating. When putting the wheels back on the vehicle, we were sure to torque them to spec (92 ft/lbs to be specific) using a digital torque wrench.
After restoring and protecting the shine on the wheels and calipers, we returned to the body for Paint Protection Film application. We installed Xpel Ultimate to the fenders, rocker panels, and full hood.
Finally, we covered the whole vehicle with Opti-Coat Pro, making it easier to clean and protect the condition and shine of the paint. Here are a few shots of the end result, taken by the owner of the F-Type when he came to pick up the vehicle.
